Trump is not the problem. He is the result. He is the product of an inefficient system, a failed government, and an angry populace. He is a rejection to the career politician, their attempt to leach into every orifice of life, and the policies that have abandoned millions.
People feel forgotten, people feel unheard, the people are not represented in Congress or the dusty Electoral College. Jagged districts carve up states to elect a certain contender. Money flows freely, undisclosed. Legislators and high ranking officials enact laws that only perpetuate their power and flaws. Government has failed us.
The American citizenry has sat idly aside while these unrepresentative bodies have dis-invested from education and placed stock in corporations. We are a nation of ignorant, distracted sheep. We created this political mess too.
Inaction is an act in itself. Not demanding fair representation, ignoring deregulation, permitting corrosive amounts of money to buy elections. Good God, we know this! "Politics are corrupt." Just last year, the Pew Research Center reported that 19% of Americans trusted the government. 19%! September 2015, Gallup found, "75% in [the] U.S. see widespread government corruption." Just this October, 70% said they are dissatisfied with how things are going in this country. See, as Americans, we're not so different. We admittedly know it is broken.
I have lost faith in this government’s ability. It should dissolve and rebuild.
As humans, we grow. Continuously. Why should we expect different from a system that is made up of humans? How can we cling to text from another time and say it is our own? We expect ourselves to change, learn, make mistakes, adjust, and move forth, but not of our government? Our laws and lives have stretched and deformed to adhere to a failing, out of touch establishment. I am sick of hearing, "Well, that's just how it is. That's how it's always been!" To that I say, "Is that really rational reasoning?" My dog has fleas, but he's always had fleas, so be it. Let them bite and torment him. Illogical, insanity. This is our livelihood.
We are a young nation. Just 240 years old, on our 45th president. It is not too late. Civilizations have thrived and periled before us and this moment is only a fleck in time. We must learn from past faults. We are a powerful, rich, brilliant nation because of our citizens. The people of this country have made it and can break it. Our money finances their salaries, subsidizations, tax breaks, global economy, and wars. U.S. income tax provides 4 times the amount of revenue as corporate taxes, yet corporations receive representation and relief.
This all became a clearer when I realized this:
The American health system has to be one the most disgusting and disturbing scams inflicted upon people. The governments’ lack of providing a minimum amount of coverage to its citizens makes them unique in being an industrialized nation. The U.S. is the world's largest and most influential economy, but citizens here go bankrupt and/or die because they're sick. Prices are outrageous. Insurance only covers some and it is also expensive. Insurance denies coverage and has pillaged families for decades. Now, we are mandated to give these unethical corporations more. They have evaded the judicial system and responsibility, so their profits carry on. Hundreds of thousands have been wronged. Maybe more. Citizens have stories, ex employees know more. I encourage those to share.
The revolving door between federal positions and the health industry is shameful to its core. Taking thousands upon thousands of dollars from an industry, doing their bidding and/or ignoring their practices is negligent. Joining their industry after your federal post is an undeniable conflict of interest. Is my best interest at heart or your future job? Why does that feel like a no brainer? Jobs are then taken with the pharmaceutical companies that create the vital, life saving drugs, which people absolutely need, that people pay for in blood. Or they take jobs in the biotech industry that make other chemicals to spray the food that also make people sick. The list continues... banking, war, religion, science, hello, our food! No sector has gone untouched; our vulnerabilities have been sold off for great profits.
This is not my government or the government of the future. I am enraged. I'd rather die speaking truth than live in denial. Nothing about this election makes me feel ok and I find it absurd that those around me haven’t paused and asked one another, “what next?”
